trouble returning engine to idle
Hello,
My scooter normally idles around the correct 2,000 RPM more or less. However, when I accelarate into the higher gears, then slow down to a complete stop, the engine doesn't go back down to the 2000 rpm idle speed, and instead it remains stuck at 4,000 RPM (this is when im sitting still, at a red traffic light perhaps). Also, you might find it helpful to know, that if i am in the correct idle speed of 2,000, then turn the throttle to accelerate, the scooter does not actually move foward until the engine reaches 4,000 RPM. This doesn't seem right and I dont think the scooter was that way when i first bought it. it seems to me like these 2 problems are related since they both occur at 4,000 rpm's. thanks for the help! |

Has to do with heat. It will be fine when just cruising around
lightly, but after putting some load on the motor, and everything heating up, the mixture becomes too lean at idle. 1/4 turn rich on the idle mixture should do it. Why it might start to act that way, when it was fine before, is a different matter. As far as the clutch engaging later, you could take a peek at the variator. Maybe the rollers are dirty or worn. If so, they might not be travelling out as easily as before, needing higher rpm. The less they travel out on accel from stop, the higher the belt will be on the rear pulley. That means the crank will have to turn faster for the rear pulley to turn at the same speed as it was before... so needing higher rpm before the clutch engages. Just a theory . The fact that both problems share a commonrpm is probably a coincidence.. or since it's always fun to explore ideas, the case seal on the variator side could be leaking, causing the idle rpm problems. It might have started leaking due to vibrations caused by something wrong with the variator, which in turn is causing the higher clutch engagement rpm. Last edited by StepVino; 02-08-2008 at 19:56. |
